Annual reports contain multiple information types: narrative, financial tables, performance metrics, governance content and forward-looking strategy. The design challenge is to create consistency without forcing every page into the same layout.
Start with a clear information hierarchy
Separate major sections with deliberate divider pages or strong headings. The reader should always know where they are in the report.
Give important numbers room
Do not bury every metric in paragraphs. Use KPI blocks selectively for revenue, growth, operational output, reach or other high-value figures.
Treat tables as designed content
Use consistent header styling, alignment, spacing and number formatting. Large tables may need their own pages rather than being squeezed around surrounding content.
Use imagery with a reason
Photographs should reinforce the organisation, its people, facilities, projects or impact. Decorative stock imagery can reduce credibility if it feels disconnected from the report.
